Arizona Cypress
Long-Lived, Drought-Tolerant Evergreens for Austin Landscapes
With its silvery-blue foliage and broad pyramidal shape, Arizona Cypress brings a soft, elegant glow to Austin yards. Despite its relaxed look, this is a rugged survivor — thriving in heat, drought, and lean soils once established, with little need for supplemental water.
On the Edwards Plateau, Arizona Cypress feels perfectly at home. Thin limestone soils and sharp drainage that challenge other evergreens suit it well. It weaves naturally into the Hill Country palette of live oaks, junipers, and native grasses, adding a shimmering silvery accent.
On the Blackland Prairie, where heavy clay soils can hold too much water, success comes with raised beds, berms, or gentle slopes. Given that foundation, Arizona Cypress grows into a long-lived presence that softens open spaces with its calming blue-green color and textured form.

Care
- Pruning – Minimal. Remove deadwood or lightly shape once a year. Avoid heavy cuts that disrupt its natural form.
- Inspection – Check seasonally for water-related stress. In hot, dry summers, look for thinning or bronzing foliage that signals drought — provide a deep soak if needed. After periods of heavy rain, especially on clay soils, ensure drainage is adequate to prevent root issues.
- Mulching – Refresh mulch yearly to help conserve moisture and protect roots, especially on heavier Prairie soils.
