Austin Watering Guide

Watering in Austin requires strategy for conservation and for plant health. Our climate swings from drought to downpour so choosing native and adapted plants like agaves, salvias, and lantanas helps. Knowing how and when to water is also important.

Water deeply; infrequently. Shallow, frequent watering weakens roots and increases disease risk. Morning (5–9 a.m.) is best to minimize evaporation. If possible, test soil before watering — your finger is the best moisture meter. Use a trowel to dig 5–10 inches down. The soil should feel like a wrung-out sponge. Too dry? Water longer. Too wet? Water less next time.

Trees:

  1. Water your usual schedule.
  2. Next day, dig 5 inches down and feel soil.
  3. Adjust watering for consistent moisture 5–8 inches deep.
  4. Once optimal timing is set, reduce watering frequency:
    • Cool weather: every 2 months
    • May–Sept: once per month
    • 100°F+ temps: every 2–3 weeks
    • ** New trees: weekly (Sept–May); 2–3x weekly (June–Aug)
    • Move water sources around canopy targeting root zones.

Other Factors:

  • Plant type: Native ≠ drought-tolerant; xeric plants need less
  • Soil: Clay holds water; sand drains fast
  • Microclimate: Sun, wind, and slope affect drying rate
  • Rainfall: Adjust for rain as needed

Container Watering:

  • Water thoroughly but don’t let pots sit in water.
  • Terracotta dries faster than glazed.
  • Outdoor pots, sun exposure, and small sizes = more frequent watering.

Seasonal Guide:

  • Xeric plants: March–Sept: 1x/month or 2x/month when new
  • Native perennials: Weekly when new; every 1–2 weeks when established
  • Annuals/Other perennials: Daily in 95°F+, otherwise weekly
  • Lawns: 1–1.5” every 5 days in summer; monthly in winter (less for buffalo/natives)
